Olympics 2021

Welcome to week 16 of  Blogging Through the Alphabet 2021. This week our letter of the alphabet is the letter O and I thought I'd share a couple of resources to get you looking at the Olympics as it commences tomorrow!  It's certainly going to be a different one this year and a year late to boot.  My co-host Desiree at Our Homeschool Notebook the topic is O is for Olympics.

This year the summer Olympic Games are being hosted in Tokyo from the 23 July 2021 to the 8 August 2021.  The Paralympic Games are being hoted from the 24 August to the 5th of September.  I'm quite excited about these games as Australia has a homeschool student - Oceana Mackenzie who is competing in the new sport climbing division. We also have extended family - Kate French from the United Kingdom modern pentathlon team competing as well. Wow and as I was writing this it was announced that in 4021 days Brisbane Queensland will be hosting the 2032 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Creed

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well." Olympic Creed

The Olympic Charter

"The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter

Winter Olympics 2014 Unit Study Resources

It feels like the other day that we enjoyed meeting the Australian Summer Olympic Champions at Federation Square and studying the Summer Olympics .  This year it's time to take a look at the Winter Olympics.

The very first Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France in 1924.  This event is held every four years. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games host city was selected on the 4th of July 2007 and is Sochi, in Russia.  There will be 98 events in 15 winter sports.

A day at Federation Square meeting Olympic Athletes

Yesterday Paul, Sir N and I took a trip to Federation Square to join in the festivities and meet some Australian 2012 Olympic Athletes.

We had an enjoyable trip to Federation Square on the City Circle Tram

We were ahead of schedule and had to stop in front of Parliament House for seven minutes which gave us a window to explore.

We also had a neat time spotting the different elephant statues dotted around the city in celebration of Melbourne Zoos 150th Birthday.

The team members were generous with their time and happy to stop for photo's with us.

Then it was time to listen to all the formal speeches welcoming the athletes to Melbourne.

On the top: These four ladies (three of them are in their 90's one of them is 97) set a world record last week in their swimming relay event. Bottom: Anna Meares and Sally Pearson.

It was a lovely day meeting some wonderful people and the weather was great too.

Will you be visiting any of our Olympians in a city near you ?

TT - Olympics 2012

Todays Tuesdays Treasure is
in celebration of the upcoming

30th Olympic Games

being hosted this July in London

This is a preliminary list of resources that I have found to explore the enormous world of the summer Olympic games. I am waiting on a few more books from the library and every day the list on Pinerest grows.  I know that some of you do not have a Pinterest so I have listed a few of the resources that I have found there.
Rather than waiting till after we have completed our explorations and then sharing the resources after the Olympics I decided to share a few of interrest and let you choose something for your family.  If you know of any more sites or books that you LOVE then please share them in the comment section so I can add them in. I am especially interested in books for 6-10 year olds.

At the Library:

The books listed above are not all age appropriate for seven year olds.  I will pick and choose bits from each book to share with Sir N.

On Pinterest:

These are just a few of the sites I have found via Pinterest.
I have not quiet settled on which Notebook pages we will be using but am looking over the above list.

 On YouTube

Sir N and I have enjoyed the first six clips on this list.
