Can You Find It, Too? {Tuesday's Treasures}

One of the most challenging aspects of a Charlotte Mason education is learning how to incorporate the arts in our learning as this is an area of learning that I have very little knowledge and as a result I have not done very much art appreciation with Nathaniel.  Last year I was visiting my friend Beck who is currently home educating her four children and following Ambleside Online told me about some wonderful books she was using from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She has them on her shelf and has loaned them to us.

Can You Find It, Too?

  • Number of Pages:40
  • Publisher:The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Publication Date:01 Nov 2004
  • ISBN 10:0-8109-5046-4
  • ISBN 13:9780810950467
  • Illustrator: 20 colour illus
This is the second book in the series featuring paintings from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, three other American museums as well as seven European collections.  The book contains beautifully detailed paintings which cover varying topics from battle scenes, castles, horses, coronations and tall ships.  Accompanying each painting is a list of can you find it items. For example she asks, "In this painting of astronomers can you find 1 bull's head, 2 people writing, 2 yellow feet, 2 winged women, 4 people pointing to the sky, 1 bridge, 2 flaming hats, 3 obelisks?"   At the bottom of the list is a short description of the painting along with dates.

Nathaniel and I have immensely enjoyed these books and hope that if you can find them in your local library or a friends book shelf that you too would enjoy a game of Eye Spy together!

Get Into Art Animals {Tuesday's Treasures}

One of the things I enjoy about our library visits is discovering new books to bring home and explore. Upon a recent visit to our local library I discovered a new book with plenty of hands on step by step projects. Get into Art Animals is not a typical art projects book.

This book is two fold in it's approach.  Firstly it introduces the reader to a famous art piece and the artist who created it, then it gives a step by step hands on project for you to create your own version of the art work you have just learned about.

Susie encourages us to know that art is not only something we observe but rather something that we can all do, she does a wonderful job encouraging the reader to try new mediums to create their own masterpieces of art.

5 Books on Studying Artists

This months theme for the Poppins Book Nook is ARTISTS.  Art can be a sensitive topic among home educating families. It all boils down to your preference and your personal home educating philosophy.

I have a passion for twaddle free living literature and have been collecting books for many years now.  Today I would like to share five of my favorite go to books and five art projects we have enjoyed this year.

If you would like more information on a book click on the link below the graphic.

Until Next month

Mondrian Inspired ART

I'd always found these types of pictures rather attractive to look at and so when the Virtual Fridge theme of modern artists was chosen I went looking for a project.  I discovered How to make your own Piet Mondrian painting. It was a super easy project and really effective.

Sand Sculpting Australia {Field Trip}

Last week Friday I had the most wonderful experience joining a few other home educating families and going to the Sand Sculpting Australia exhibition: Friends Foes & Super Heroes.  This particular event will remain open to the public until the 26 April 2015.

I learned some interesting facts about Sand Sculpting.
  • 'Brickies loam' is used to sculpt with.  This sand is different to the sand on the beach in that each grain of sand is square, which means that it sticks together better.
  • Sculptures take up three weeks of 8 hour days to sculpt.
  • Only water is added to the sand to enable sculpting
  • Sculpting takes place from top to bottom.
  • All the sculptures are solid sand.
  • Completed sculptures are sprayed with a biodegradable sealant to help repel moisture
  • Although they are strong they do need maintenance.  This is the job of the resident sculptor.
  • After the event is finished the sculptures are broken down and the sand is stored for future events.
You can read more about the history and how to build sand sculptures over at Sand Sculpting Australia.

It was a beautiful day to fully immerse ourselves in the art of sand at the beach.  If you find yourself near an exhibition take some time to appreciate the creativity in this art form.
